If being a voyager or an adventurer sounds like a cool way for kids to spend their summer break, it is – at least according to the students in the Kyle Parks and Recreation Department summer camp.

With weekly field trips, daily games and a multitude of activities, the Kyle summer camp program, held at Wallace Middle School, offered something for everyone.

For Barton Middle School student Anthony Garcia, 12, more gym time and getting to pick some of the games made this camp more fun than others he’s attended.

“Basketball is my favorite,” Anthony said.

Kameron Trotter, 11, said she liked all the activities but especially arts and crafts. A recent graduate of Kyle Elementary, Kameron will start at Wallace Middle School this fall.

The Adventure Campers, for sixth through ninth graders, enjoyed field trips such as Aquaholics (boat rental) for a day at the lake, the Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch in San Antonio, Hometown Cinema in Lockhart, Chaparral Ice for skating, Blazer Tag and kayaking.

The Voyager camp for those in second through fifth grades offered field trips to Sunset Bowling, Bisque Bistro for pottery painting, shows at the Magik Theater, as well as presentations by the Snake Farm and Austin’s Mobile Planetarium.

Games in the gym for the older campers included Rock/Paper/Scissors tag, Ship to Shore, Man Overboard and Aye, Aye, Captain. For the younger set, burlap sack races and relays were some of the most popular games.

Dahlstrom Middle School student Cierra Goodnight, 13, liked all the crazy games they play at the camp each week. For Grace McCoy, 13, a student at Wallace, hanging out with a new variety of friends was what made the camp cool to her.

“These games really tire you out,” Grace said.
