Kazim Ali to read at Texas State and Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center


Kazim Ali, author and poet, will read from his latest works as part of the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center’s line-up of visiting writers. Born in the UK to parents of Indian descent, Ali was raised in Canada and the United States. His books include several volumes of poetry, including “The Far Mosque,” “The Fortieth Day,” and the cross-genre text “Bright Felon: Autobiography and Cities.” His novels include “Quinn’s Passage,” named one of “The Best Books of 2005” by Chronogram magazine, and “The Disappearance of Seth.” He is the associate editor of the literary magazine FIELD and founding editor of the small press, Nightboat Books. He is an associate professor of Creative Writing and Comparative Literature at Oberlin College and teaches in the Masters of Fine Arts program of the University of Southern Maine. Ali received a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature from the University at Albany, and an MFA in Creative Writing from New York University. He will read at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 29 at the Alkek Library, Texas State University and then again at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 30 at the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center in historic downtown Kyle. Both events are free and open to the public.


Turkey Trot in San Marcos


Walk or run before stuffing yourself with stuffing this Thanksgiving morning at the Turkey Trot. A portion of proceeds will benefit United Way of Hays County. The event kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with a Kids Fun Run; adult runners begin at 9 a.m. Nov. 22 at the Tanger Outlet stores in San Marcos. Participants can register in advance or on the day of the run.


LBJ Museum Tree Lighting


The Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos will celebrate its sixth anniversary with a public reception, tree lighting and holiday serenade at 6 p.m. Dec. 6. Students from the San Marcos CISD’s Pre-Kindergarten program at Hernandez Elementary School will sing Christmas carols.  Cookies and punch will be served. This year’s event is dedicated to Mrs. Johnson, who would have celebrated her 100th birthday in December. Santa Claus will make a special appearance at the event. The event is free and open to the public.
