The Lehman girls basketball team’s furious comeback fell just short in a 46-38 home loss to Dripping Springs Tuesday night.
A plethora of turnovers and missed scoring opportunities in the fourth quarter killed Lehman’s chances as they scored only five points in the final eight minutes.
“We only scored off free throws in the fourth quarter. We just flat out stopped making buckets,” said head coach Jamie Coy. “We have to work on finishing when games are tight in the fourth quarter.”
The Lady Lobos, faced with a 24-14 deficit at halftime, came out firing in the third quarter.
Strong post scoring by Ariana Gallegos and Karsholyn Brown’s tough inside rebounding got the Lady Lobos within striking distance.
Bria Cheatham then hit consecutive 3-pointers to cut the gap to 28-24 midway through the third quarter.
Brown tied the game at 28 with an offensive rebound and put-back. Cheatham intercepted the ensuing inbounds pass and was fouled as she made a layup, sending the Lady Lobo home crowd into a frenzy. She sank the free throw, giving the Lobos a 31-28 lead with 1:06 left in the third.
“It was just us being aware of our surroundings and finding the open player,” Coy said of the 19-6 run that gave the Lady Lobos a 33-30 lead heading to the fourth quarter. “We were solid with the ball offensively and defensively.”
Lehman’s offense didn’t run as smoothly in the fourth as they were plagued with untimely turnovers.
“That’s what killed us were those unforced turnovers,” Coy said. “If we start cutting down on those we’ll be more successful every time.”
