Hays County again split among three congressional districts

STAFF REPORT

Hays County ended up divided between three congressional districts in a new redistricting map unveiled Tuesday by a panel of federal judges in San Antonio.

Far eastern Hays County is in District 35, which snakes from eastern Austin to south San Antonio. The center part of the county is in District 21, currently represented by U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, which is anchored in San Antonio and includes several rural Hill Country counties. Far western Hays County is in District 25, which stretches to the outskirts of Fort Worth.

The maps appear to set off a showdown between U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, who said this afternoon he would run in District 35, and former San Marcos Mayor Susan Narvaiz, who has already announced her intention to run for that seat. Narvaiz faces a primary opponent in San Marcos resident Rob Roark.

“As an effective advocate for schools, veterans, health care and retirement security, my service fits well with the neighborhoods that have now been joined from South San Antonio to North Austin,” Doggett said in a news release. “I will continue the visits with working families that I already have under way. And I will continue to stand up to Rick Perry and other extremists, whose misguided policies are threatening our families’ security.”

In the Texas Senate, Hays County has been divided between District 25, which is represented by state Sen. Jeff Wentworth, R-San Antonio, and District 21, which is represented by state Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo.

The only approved map that does not divide Hays County is for representation in the state House. Hays and Blanco counties are represented by Jason Isaac, R-Dripping Springs.
