Rocking under the Stars
Bring your lawnchairs and blankets to the last show of the 2012 Keep San Marcos Beautiful Spring Concert Series featuring San Marcos rockabilly quartet the Georges with the Saucerians for a night of musical entertainment under the stars Thursday, April 12. Art, eco and food vendors open at 7 p.m. and musicians take the stage at 7:30 p.m. at this free family-friendly event on the river. San Marcos Plaza Park, 401 E. Hopkins. Old Settler’s Music Festival
The nationally respected Old Settler’s Music Festival celebrates its 25th year with an exceptional lineup of roots, bluegrass and Americana music beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday, April 19. Known for “real music done right,” this 4-day festival includes workshops, sing-alongs, campground-stage jam sessions, kids’ activities, a market area full of unique arts and crafts, specialty foods and brews. oldsettlersmusicfest.org. Tales of a celestial sleuth
On this the 100th anniversary, the question still begs, Did the moon sink the Titanic? Physics and astronomy professor Donald Olson will demonstrate how his team used astronomical sleuthing skills, historical documents, astronomy software, and old-fashioned research to explain how a rare lunar alignment helped to bring the fatal iceberg into the path of the RMS Titanic. Check out this lively discussion with stunning visual images at 7 p.m. Sunday, April 15 at the San Marcos Public Library.


Ride 2 Recovery
Take a break from your day and come out and cheer on our veterans as they ride through town on the annual Ride 2 Recovery. On Tuesday, April 17 they will depart San Marcos and are expected to ride by Wallace Middle School at 10:20 a.m., Barton Middle School and Hays High School at 10:35 a.m. and Elm Grove Elementary School at 10:50 a.m. on their way to south Austin. Pave the Way
You still have a couple of weeks to purchase an engraved memorial paver to be placed in the entry courtyard of the new Kyle Public Library. Each paver is $100 and may be purchased at the city offices or by calling the library at 268-7411 before May 1. The new Kyle Public Library is having a “soft opening” on Monday, April 16, resuming story times on Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays. The first Page Turner’s Book Club at the new library will be Thursday, April 19 and ESL classes will resume on April 21. The official grand opening slated for May 12.


Poetry reading
Come downtown for a little culture as poet Gerald Stern reads from his recent works at 7:30 p.m. next Friday, April 20 at the Katherine Anne Porter House in Kyle. Born in Pennsylvania in 1925, Stern’s work has won numerous literary prizes including the National Book Award for his 1998 book “This Time: New and Selected Poems.”
