Kyle Police are reporting that a 13-year-old area girl who was a passenger in a head-on collision on Interstate 35 Monday morning died of her injuries later that night at Dell Children’s Hospital in north Austin. Investigators with the Kyle police are determining if the girl was wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash.
The girl’s mother was airlifted to Brackenridge Medical Center in Austin. She remains in critical condition according to Kyle Police Chief Jeff Barnett.
Barnett said the driver of a white Lexus E350, an 18-year old female from Florida, was cited for failure to yield which is a traffic violation. She sustained minor injuries. No other charges have been filed at this time.
Based on police reports, the collision happened just before 10:30 a.m. as the mother and daughter who were in a Plymouth Neon were exiting the northbound side of IH-35 at mile marker 213 just south of Center Street. The access roads are two-way roads at this location.
The driver of the Lexus was heading southbound on the feeder road, Barnett said, and did not stop at the yield sign as the Neon was exiting the highway.
Two other passengers in the Lexus, siblings of the female driver, were treated for minor injuries, according to Barnett.
Hays County Precinct 2 Commissioner Mark Jones said the realignment of the access road will begin in August and the traffic shift from two-way to one-way will be completed by August 2013.
