Do not walk through anything more than short grass and keep toes covered. Do not reach where you cannot see in your garage. Snakes seem to be abundant, especially in garages.
Again, we have snake tidbits directly from City Council members.
Roland Garza saw a one-foot rattlesnake enter the garage of City Hall (over a week ago, before the lawn was mowed.) When rattlesnakes give birth in late summer and early fall (usually litters of 9-14), the babies are about a foot long.
TJ Callis slayed a 2-foot rattlesnake in his garage.
I’ve hesitated to share what RonTom thought he saw in our backyard this summer, it’s so wild. His eyes saw an amphibian with a short tail and a much wider body than our ever-present scaly lizards. Unless his eyes deceived him, he saw a “horny toad.”

Last week, I ran out of room to mention this. Imagine my surprise when between last week and this week the website for The Horned Lizard Conservation Society (www.hornedlizards.org) added word of the Central Texas premier of “Where Did the Horny Toad Go?”
Yes! The Horned Lizard Conservation Society invites you to join them for a full-length documentary directed by Stefanie Leland, Jar of Grasshoppers Productions. The engaging film explores people’s experiences with Texas horned lizards and investigates the declines that have occurred in much of the species range.
The showing will be held on October 13 at The Corral outdoor theater in Wimberley, Texas, locally famous for its “stars under the stars.” An HLCS business meeting will be held at 5:30, and a fundraiser chili dinner will start at 6:30. The movie will start at 7:30, to be followed by a Question and Answer period featuring some of the participants in the movie. A $5 admission fee will go to support some of the Society’s conservation grants programs.

It is the same evening as Mountain City’s annual “Fire & Ice Festival.” The schedule is as follows: Fire & Ice Taste off, 5-5:45 p.m.; Jump Houses and Obstacle, 5-9 p.m.; Games, 5-6:30 p.m.; Face Painting, 5-7 p.m.; BBQ Dinner (some extras, if you did not reserve), 6 p.m.; Silent Auction, 5-7 p.m.; Island Texas performs; 6:30-10 p.m.
