Free museums and historical sites in San Marcos this Saturday
On Oct. 5, museums and historical sites in San Marcos will be open free of charge (though donations are appreciated). If you miss it this weekend, don’t worry! The Historical Association of San Marcos hosts free museums on the first Saturday of each month. The participating venues include the Charles S. Cock House Museum and Merriman Cabin (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), the Hays County Courthouse (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), Centro Cultural Hispano de San Marcos (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), LBJ Museum of San Marcos (10 a.m.-5 p.m.), Central Texas Wing, Commemorative Air Force at the San Marcos Municipal Airport (10 a.m.-4 p.m.) and the Calaboose African American History Museum (10 a.m.-2 p.m.).
Driftwood Heritage Day Oct. 6
The Driftwood Community Improvement Club extends an invitation to the neighborhood to join them at 7 p.m. on Saturday at the Driftwood Community Center for a hearty supper of chicken, sausages, sides and homemade desserts. There is no charge, but donations are always welcome. The center’s quilting bee group will give away a queen-size quilt with an Irish Chain design to the winning ticket holder. A deer rifle will also be given away.
Pet Fest to benefit PALS
Pet Prevent A Litter (PALS) of Central Texas is holding its 10th annual Pet Fest and Pet Fest 5K Run/Walk from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. on Saturday at San Marcos Plaza Pavilion Park (located at 401 E. Hopkins Street) and also the City Park (located at 170 Charles Austin Drive). A 5K race begins at 8 a.m. followed by a one-mile all ages Fun Run at 9 a.m. The celebration includes a silent auction, contests, demonstrations, children’s games and activities, food, vendors, live music and adoptable animals from area shelters and rescues. Admission is free; event organizers strongly encourage bringing a donation of dry pet food. Cash donations are also accepted. Pet Fest is a celebration of all pets, large and small, and restrained animals with nice manners are invited. Costumes are encouraged!
Sacred Springs Powwow offers new surprises in San Marcos
The Sacred Springs Powwow is bringing a few surprises to San Marcos this Sunday. (We love surprises!) They include bison burgers, visitors from New Mexico and a Choctaw color guard from Oklahoma. Adult tickets are $2 or two cans of food for the Hays County Food Bank. Children, students, elders, and veterans get in free. Plan to attend this fun, colorful and sacred event from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Oct. 6 at Aquarena Center in San Marcos.
