TSU camp and Cheatham Street promote young songwriters

STAFF REPORT

Any young students interested in writing lyrics? The Central Texas Writing Project is partnering with the Cheatham Street Foundation to offer a Young Songwriters’ Camp at the Cheatham Street Warehouse June 18-23.

The CTWP is Texas State University’s branch of the National Writing Project. The camp is usually offered for elementary and secondary level students.

This year’s songwriters’ camp is aimed at young musicians in the secondary grade levels, around ages 14-18. However, depending on a students proficiency with his or her instrument and their willingness to explore writing lyrics, other ages will also be accepted.

The goal is to develop the students into original songwriters. The camp will be conducted as a songwriters workshop, and Tuesday through Saturday a guest artist will speak on the songwriting process and aspects of the music business, and will assist the young songwriters as they develop their own original compositions. At week’s end a live performance will be held onstage at Cheatham Street Warehouse with each songwriter performing his/her original song before a live audience. Each young songwriter will receive a CD of the performance. Registration deadline is June 13. youngsongwriterscamp.com

A benefit concert will be held at 9 p.m. Monday at Cheatham Street Warehouse to raise money for the camp and its scholarship fund. A song swap will feature preformances by Aaron Allan, Brady Black, Grant Ewing, Halleyanna, Foscoe Jones, and Ashley Monical.
