UIL One Act Competition Play at Lehman
In the middle of a howling snowstorm, eight people are stuck together for the night at Grace’s roadside diner. By the end of the evening, some find love, some find themselves, and some just get back on the road. Join the Lehman theater department for a night of love, laughter and mayhem as they present William Inge’s “Bus Stop.” Performances are on Monday March 19 at 4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. in the Lehman High School Theatre. Tickets are $5 and all proceeds benefit the LHS theatre program. Call 268-8454 X8613 for information or reservations.

Destination Imagination on to state
Seventeen teams from four Hays CISD elementary campuses – Carpenter Hill, Elm Grove, Pfluger and Tobias – represented the district at the recent Destination Imagination Capitol Region Meet, with Carpenter Hill Elementary’s DI Dudes and Never Ending Noggins qualifying for the DI State Meet. The Never Ending Noggins also received the “Spirit of DI Award,” as did Pfluger Elementary’s Falcon Eye team, “for exceptional spirit, teamwork, volunteerism, and sportsmanship.” Elm Grove advanced six teams to the regionals and Pfluger and Tobias sent single entries. Carpenter Hill fielded nine total teams, seven of those placing, including the Noggins’ 1st in the “News to Me” category and the Dudes’ 1st in the “Hold It” category.

Hays CISD earns Rain Catcher Award
Hays CISD won a 2011 Texas Rain Catcher Award from the Texas Water Development Board. The honor stemmed from the district’s water conservation efforts. Two elementary schools, Carpenter Hill and Pfluger, have storage tanks that can hold more than 100,000 gallons of rainwater. The systems also collect condensation from the heating and air conditioning units. All harvested water is used for irrigation at the campuses. The rainwater harvesting systems at both schools are part of the math, science, and ecology/environment lessons.

Students collect $10,000+ in pennies
Several schools in Hays CISD participated in a recent “Pennies for Patients” drive to help raise money for cancer research and treatment. Negley Elementary students raised more than $6,000 and Tom Green Elementary students added another $3,200 to the district. Kyle Elementary, a campus that has participated in the drive for 12 years, raised another $500.01.

The money will be donated to the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society.
