We, the Uhland community, were on the “tail end” of the thundershowers Saturday night. A lot of lightning and thunder produced ½ to ¾ inches of rain according to reports. It did settle the dust and the grass responded nicely.

A couple of weeks ago when a thunderstorm came through this area that was all thunder, lightning and a strong wind, but did a lot of damage to the home of James and Carrie Woods and family. The roof had extensive damage, as well as the ceiling. A tree branch also fell on their van. No rain, but glad no one was hurt.

The cotton harvest has started and a lot of acres were picked when the forecast of rain was heard. That was one season of the year I disliked when I was growing up. There were no mechanical machines to do the picking. We wore old gloves with the fingers cut off the tops and picked the cotton out of the burrs, put the cotton in the sack and dragged it behind us on a strap that hung over our shoulders. About 1500 pounds made a 500-pound bale of ginned cotton (all the trash and seed was removed from the cotton by the ginning process). When the wagon was full, Dad would take it to the cotton gin in Niederwald. My sister, Pauline, and I enjoyed that, since we usually got to buy an “all day sucker” if we had a penny.
On Aug. 10, Daniel and Sharon Heiderman, accompanied by Debbie Moore, Glenda Dees and Janet and Ray Patterson, attended the graduation of Courtney Holt, daughter of Kenneth and Debbie Holt of Lubbock. Courtney is the niece of Sharon, Glenda and Janet, and she graduated from TCU. Congratulations and best of luck to her in her future studies.

Yes, it’s that time of the year again, when school starts; so get your vacation time in if you plan one.

Get-well wishes and prayers go with Ed Daugherty and George Lyons, Jr. Glad to report no swarms of mosquitoes have been discovered here.
