SUBMITTED REPORT
Hays and Caldwell County amateur radio operators will join thousands of other radio “buffs” this weekend in an annual test of their communications capabilities. Radio amateurs, also called “hams,” are sometimes tapped to provide communications during disruptions caused by floods, tornadoes or wildfires. Using data modes (such as radioteletype), amateur satellites, voice communications, and even Morse code, hams from across the U.S. and Canada will demonstrate their communications capabilities during the test.
The event, first held in 1933, is called “Field Day,” and is sponsored by the American Radio Relay League, the national association for Amateur Radio. Radio amateurs will set up stations in parks, schools, fire stations and Red Cross headquarters. More than 37,000 participated in last year’s event, from over 2,600 stations.
In this area, the Hays/Caldwell Amateur Radio Club will participate at the South Hays County Fire Station, 3300 Hilliard Road, near San Marcos. The public is welcome to visit and learn more about amateur radio. On-the-air operating begins at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 23, and continues until 1 p.m. Sunday, June 24.
