By writing “What’s in Season: Year Round Bible Stories for Children,” Charli (Charlotte) Anderson combined two of her favorite subjects, early childhood education and the Bible.
Anderson and her husband, who have lived in Kyle since 1994, bought the only daycare facility in town back then – Texas Tykes.
Each day, she would read a biblical story to the kids, many of whom came there for after care from the local elementary school.
She decided to write a book that would connect the everyday experiences of kids to the Bible. She drafted stories to coincide with a year-round calendar curriculum.
“Every book of the Bible is represented,” Anderson said. “All 66 of them.”
She said in addition to stories about love (February), changing seasons (March) and Easter (April), there are also stories that touch on hot topics, such as same sex parents and vegetarians.
For the same sex parents story, Anderson said she pulled from the book of Timothy where a mother and a grandmother raise a child.
“It’s not a same sex relationship,” Anderson said, “but it helps children understand that all families look different.”
While Biblical teachings are more harsh when it comes to that particular subject, Anderson said she tries to stress that kids are not responsible for their parents and that everyone has value and equal worth.
Anderson, who has been teaching since she earned her masters degree at Southwest Baptist Seminary, said the book is appropriate for second through fifth graders.
Her son Hunter, 16, designed the book cover.
