Buda Bits

Dave Rush took first place honors at the Texas Hold’em Poker Showdown on Sunday at the Onion Creek Senior Center in Buda. Coming in second was Bob Bersan, followed by Melvin Papke in third place, Ray Mason fourth, Bob Schlortt fifth, Judy Deats sixth, Barbara Rush seventh and Billy Gray eighth place. All eight players received prizes valued from $50-$250. Door prizes were awarded throughout the afternoon. Proceeds from the event benefited the building fund for the senior citizens.
A big “thank you” to the Buda Lions Club and senior citizen members, Richard Harlow, Judy Deats, Donna Sinner and Norma Williams for all their help in making the day a great one. There will be more news to come next week on the financial end and all the great sponsors who helped with the tournament.
Buda resident, Bob Elder along with daughter Amy Elder Hayden from Arlington, celebrated Bob’s 81st birthday and Father’s Day by making tandem skydiving jumps in Fentress. Wife, Audrey, led the ground support element with Sonny and Ruth Elder Verver and Johnny and Julie Elder Jacques carrying the photographic and cheering roles. All adjourned to Red Lobster afterwards to wind up the celebration. Bob said, “the immediate disorientation exiting the plane was startling and it was all fun.” He and Amy plan to do it again, this time with their eyes open.

Norma Williams attended her 60th high school reunion on Saturday in San Antonio even though she had graduated from the Masonic Home and School of Texas located in Fort Worth. The school closed in 2003 after 105 years in operation and the annual reunions are now held in different cities. Maybe Williams will request Buda for next year’s reunion!

Judy Powell’s fourth grandson made his appearance into the world Sunday afternoon, June 24,2012 at 1:10 p.m. He is the son of Chris and Michelle Powell, formerly of Buda now living in Round Rock. He has been named Sammy David and he tipped the scales at seven pounds, six and a half ounces and measured 19-1/2 inches. The little Powell has tons of aunts, uncles and cousins to welcome him into the family.

With the construction of the new Onion Creek Senior Citizens Center underway, parking at the center has become greatly constricted. Members are urged to park at Good Shepherd Church on RR 967, across from Buda Primary School. Shuttle service will be available to bring you to the senior center starting at 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays. Thanks for your cooperation.

Red, White & Buda is coming to town on July 4 starting with a children’s parade at 9 a.m. down Main Street, followed by free activities in Buda City Park until 11 a.m. A big fireworks show will light up the sky at 9:30 p.m. at Buda City Park. See you there!
