Camp Heart Song provides support for grieving children

STAFF REPORT

The loss of a loved one, while hard for most anyone, can be especially devastating for children and teens.

To help children and adolescents with their grief, Central Texas Medical Center Hospice in San Marcos created two summer bereavement camps, Camp Heart Song and Camp Heart Song, Too!

These two and three-day camps offer kids 8-13 and teens 14-18 a way to explore the feelings surrounding their loss in a safe and supportive environment. The camps include sports, fishing, crafts, games and more.

According to Lisa Adams, CMTC Hospice spokesperson, the primary goal for both camps is to provide a stress-free, fun experience where kids can just be kids.

“When a young child experiences a significant death such as a parent or sibling, the loss can have a detrimental effect,” Adams said. “We believe emotional comfort is important for acceptance after a loss. Our goal is to walk with these children along the road as they heal.”

Both camps are funded through the CTMC Seasons of Sharing annual campaign and through the generous donations from community members.  There is no cost for the children to attend.
