The Texas State softball team certainly had an amazing season, but it came to an end Saturday with a 7-4 loss to Texas A&M in the College Station Regional Saturday.
The Bobcats were coming off a dominating year in which they won both the Southland Conference regular season and tournament titles to advance to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in four seasons.
In Texas State’s first game in College Station on Friday, Bobcat ace Chandler Hall no-hit eventual regional champion LSU for six innings before the Tigers rallied in the seventh inning for a 1-0 win.
The Bobcats faced elimination earlier in the day Saturday against Bethune-Cookman, but a four-run second inning, helped by a timely RBI-bunt single by former Hays High star Anna Hernandez led Texas State to a 5-3 victory.
Against the Aggies, Texas State struck first in the game with a two-RBI double by Hall that she nailed off the left-centerfield wall.
Mel Dumezich tied the game for the Aggies when she hit a solo homer over the right field wall in the third inning.
Texas State had the bases loaded in the third with one out, but was unable to score a run as the game remained tied 2-2.
The Aggies broke the game open in the top of the fifth inning, a frame that included four Texas A&M home runs.
Dumezich hit her second of the game, and Meagan May, Amber Garza and Nicole Morgan added a home run each in the inning that ultimately doomed the Bobcats.
Texas State collected a pair of runs in the sixth inning with back-to-back RBI singles by Haley Lemons and Hernandez to come to within three runs of the Aggies, but could get no closer.
It was the sixth time in school history the Bobcats finished the season with a run to the NCAA Tournament.
