Hays Heart Foundation meets at Lehman High
The Hays Heart Foundation meeting will be held 5:45 - 7:00 pm. Sept. 26 at Lehman High School room G116. At the meeting, organization leaders will explain the purpose and goals, then allow attendees to vote on whether to approve.
‘High-stakes testing’ policy discussion at U.T. campus
The 83rd Texas Legislative Session begins in January; the issue of high-stakes testing is high on the priority list. To bring stakeholders together in a nonpartisan setting and give the public an opportunity to hear and discuss the evidence for various policy options, the LBJ School of Public Affairs will host a forum titled “Measuring Up: A Statewide Conversation on High-Stakes Testing & Accountability” at 7 p.m. Sept. 24 in the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium. A Q&A session will follow, along with a networking reception. The forum will feature a roundtable of experts from academia, state government, and the private and nonprofit sectors. Eco-Bot Challenge Workshop
On Oct. 10, the Hays County Extension Office will host a free Eco-Bot Challenge Workshop for students in fourth through eighth grades. The workshop coordinates with 4-H National Youth Science Day, a national event designed to engage hundreds of thousands of American youth in a single science experiment focusing on important issues. Students will enhance their engineering skills by assembling their own robots, known as Eco-bots, and control surfaces in order to manage an environmental clean-up. Participants will then test the interaction between the Eco-Bots’ environmental engineering design features and various control-surface configurations to determine the most effective environmental clean-up solution for a simulated toxic spill. Be a mentor through Hays CISD
Research shows that having a mentor helps a child to be more successful in school. Mentors provide constant encouragement and emotional support for their students. If you are considering serving as a mentor to a student in Hays CISD, now is the time to take action. Hays CISD is recruiting community members who are interested in changing the life of a child. It involves a commitment to meet with a student once a week for 30 minutes, consent to a background check and attend one training session. Mentor training is offered in English or Spanish.
