Good job, chicken fryers!

by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN

Move over, KFC! The Men’s Club of St. John Lutheran Church fried chicken last Saturday night that beats all. Fryers were set up under the trees at the church rec. center. With a towel in one hand and a fork in the other, the guys went to work and produced the best fried chicken ever.

Some of the guys even made the mashed potatoes (I was told) and the best gravy. The ladies, along with a large crowd of citizens of the community and surrounding area, brought side dishes, and members enjoyed the meal, fellowship and the music and songs of Legend N Time (John Hanson). Thanks to all the men’s group, the ladies in the kitchen, those who donated, to all who attended and to John Hanson for the great old time country music and singing.

The Women’s Guild of St. John held its monthly meeting while the guys were frying chicken. Various charities were discussed and decided on, and the Harvest Festival plans and committees were also assigned. The arts and crafts spaces are available. A 10’x10’ space is $15, or two spaces for $25. Please call Vicki Schawe at (512)398-6622 for more information. Booths open at 8 a.m. Oct. 6 at the Uhland Community Center. There will be a country store, bake sale, raffle of a beautiful queen size quilt and other items, a cakewalk and various games for children. The turkey and dressing with all the trimmings will be served starting at 11 a.m. More information as it becomes available. Public is invited.

On Sunday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m., the World Renowned Steinway Artisan, Don Irwin, will bring his innovative and exciting music to St. John Lutheran Church at 20 N. Camino Real (Highway 21) in Uhland. The public is urged to attend.

The community was shocked and some of us frightened by the report of the many firearms found in a residence in Uhland. We are thankful that the law was able to take care of the situation. Just think, Uhland is a small and quiet little town and maybe that was why it was chosen. As was heard said, “Things are not like they used to be.”
