Sheriff’s Office requests gate codes from property owners

STAFF REPORT

The Hays County Sheriff’s Office is asking residents to provide gate codes and emergency codes to their gated communities, private residences, ranches, apartment complexes, and commercial properties.

First responders can be delayed from providing emergency services if they must enter a gate whose passcode is not on file with the sheriff’s emergency communications database, Deputy Jeff Jordan said.

“These valuable seconds and minutes could be the difference between life and death,” Jordan said in a news release. “Law enforcement, fire and emergency medical services want to provide the best services possible, and accurate gate codes will help to ensure public safety.”

The codes will remain confidential and will be used for emergency services only, he said. To provide gate code information to the sheriff’s office, email [email protected] with GATE CODE in the subject line, or call 512-393-7373.

The sheriff’s office requests the following information:

• Name of subdivision, ranch, business, apartment complex, or owner of residence

• Contact person

• Physical or 9-1-1 address

• City, state, and zip code

• Gate code

• Any special instructions or information, such as pets, Spanish-speaking only, hearing-impaired resident

• Phone number

• Email address is optional
