August already! Guess so, the Maize harvest has been “put by.”
Several fields not only produced a good crop of seed, but some of the farmers also cut the stalks and baled a lot of large bales of hay. “Waste not-want not” if the drought continues! Harvesting of the corn crop is in full swing and the acres of cotton are turning white. All we need is a good rain. I am still a farmer at heart and love ranchers, too. When I was at home with my parents, we farmed with mules and mostly “one row” equipment – compared to the 12 or more row equipment and huge tractors now. Yeah, the good old days.
Speaking of good days, Saturday, Aug. 11 can be one for you and your family when you come join us at St. John Lutheran Church in Uhland for a community chicken fry at 6 p.m. until all the chicken is eaten. Legend N Time will provide the music: that’s the man (John Hanson) who played for the car show and the church service when St. John honored the Veterans on July 1. The Men’s Group will do the chicken frying and members may bring a side dish and a friend or two.

A school supply drive will also begin on Aug. 11. You may wish to donate markers, crayons (24 count), #2 pencils, composition books, colored map pencils, facial tissue, supply box (plastic), notebook with brads, pencil bag (heavy duty with zipper), glue (8 oz. bottle or stick), spiral notebook (wide rule), large pink eraser, backpack (no wheels).

After the Sunday morning church service, Pastor David Geoke was honored on his 39th (again) birthday. A bountiful spread of various dips, chips, cold cuts, sandwiches, cakes and a delicious birthday cake was served. The large group also enjoyed the fellowship with Pastor Geoke.

It was good to see Gladys Sorrells back at the piano. Gladys had a couple of weeks of not so good health problems. She seemed to feel much better. Pastor Geoke also played his guitar as we sang some of the hymns.

Ed Daugherty is still on the not so well list. George Lyons, Jr. is still awaiting surgery on his broken wrist. Bobby Jean Hagedorn has problems with one of her shoulders. Our prayers are also with Ernie Schneider, who has had health problems for some time, and his caregiver, wife Marie Schneider. Thanks to all who called, sent cards to me (Myrtle Heideman) while I was recovering from knee surgery. Yeah, another surgery! When you are 86 years old, all the parts that have not been removed have to be repaired.

It was announced Sunday morning that St. John’s Women’s Guild would meet for their monthly meeting at 4 p.m. instead of the regular noon meeting. So come for the meeting at 4 p.m. and stay for the chicken fry. Remember this is a community event. See you there!
