UPDATE: The city of San Marcos has no record of a Joe Stack opening utility accounts, spokesperson Melissa Millecam said yesterday evening after conducting a search. The police department also apparently has no record of dealing with Stack, Millecam said.

A man  being identified as the pilot of a plane that crashed into an office building used by Internal Revenue Service in Austin this morning has used San Marcos addresses in the past but the extent of his connections to the city are unclear.

The Associated Press is quoting a federal law enforcement official saying a man named Joseph Stack flew his Piper Cherokee plane into the Echelon 1 building on Research Boulevard.

Stack posted an apparent suicide note to www.embeddedart.com, since removed from the Internet, in which he railed against the IRS and other entities.

“If you’re reading this, you’re no doubt asking yourself, “Why did this have to happen?” The simple truth is that it is complicated and has been coming for a long time,” Stack wrote.

Stack used a San Marcos address, 925 E Hwy 80, when he registered the domain name in 2003. That address corresponds with the SanMar Plaza retail center that is home to a Dollar General, Hastings and Hobby Lobby.

As of 1 p.m., San Marcos Police Chief Howard E. Williams said his department had not been asked to assist in the federal investigation of the crime.

“At this point I don’t know anything. I suspect they may ask us to do some background investigation but that has not happened,” Williams said.
