April 1 this year is noteworthy for a few different reasons. On April 1, 1980, the Buda City Council passed an ordinance creating the first Buda Public Library. At that point, the library was a shelf of books that disappeared each time the door to City Hall opened and closed. The library still has the original bookshelf and some wonderful pictures that document its history. The next time you are at the library, read the plaque by the front door. Take the time to thank the volunteers who started the library 30 years ago and the staff and volunteers who keep it going today. Starting in April and continuing throughout the rest of the year, the library will have a series of activities to celebrate its 30th anniversary.
About ten days ago, I received my first mailing from the U.S. Census - just a thin envelope to remind me that another envelope was coming. During spring break, I received the second envelope due April 1. The first census took place in 1790 as required by the U.S. Constitution. In Hays County, only 65 percent of residents responded during the 2000 Census. The census documents our population and is used for allocation of federal, state and county funds. CAPCOG estimates that each Hays County resident is worth $1,300 annually in federal funds alone. Fill out the census form before it gets buried on the kitchen table. Do it for the city. Do it for the county. Do it for the library.
