School holiday Monday
All Hays CISD students and staff will be out for a school holiday Monday, April 19. Offices re-open and classes resume at normal times next Tuesday.
Bingo fun offered
Lehman High School Project Graduation hosts Bingo Night Friday, April 16, 6-10 p.m., at the Uhland Community Center. The whole family is invited, organizers say, “for a night of fun and a chance of winning great prizes!” Food and drinks will be offered for sale. Dahlstrom offers ‘Chewy’
Dahlstrom Middle School theater students present “Chewy” Friday, 7 p.m., at the campus. Theatre director Robert Vinyard says the play is about “a hostile middle school girl, Chewy, who has to live with her male cousin, Bobby, for three months while her father recovers from back surgery.” Visibly angry from their first meeting, Chewy finally erupts, explaining her inner rage. The public is warmly invited to the free performance. Donations will be gladly accepted.
Earth Day Share-Fair coming
Don’t miss Saturday’s Kyle Earth Day Share-Fair at City Square Park from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The free event is a collaboration between Kyle Elementary School and the Parks and Recreation Department, with hands-on activities focusing on science, math and the environment. Activities include Electrifying Circuits, the Bubble Booth, the Isopod Challenge and the Breathing Machine. Some Kyle Elementary Environmental Study Center’s animals will be available for students to see and touch. Live music by Bill “Mr. Habitat” Oliver and Otter Space Band is also on tap.
The Kyle Elementary PTA will sponsor a blood drive and appointments can be made in advance at www.inyourhands.org. Click on the bottom section that says “Donate,” and search the sponsor code “kes” and the date, 4/17/2010.

Academy pitches pennies
Academy High School students are low on head count versus their HCISD sister schools, but they are long on heart, as a recent fundraiser once again proved. A two-week “Penny War” raised funds for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients project. Academy students amassed a $493 contribution.
Mariachi on Riverwalk
Lehman High and Simon Middle School director Adolph Ortiz reports Mariachi Azul y Plata (his non-varsity ensemble) will be performing on the San Antonio Riverwalk on Wednesday, April 21, 7-8 p.m., as part of the city’s annual Paseo del Rio Festival.
Negley goes green
Negley Elementary hosts “Negley Goes Green,” its second Earth Day festival, Thursday, April 22, 6-7:30 p.m. Staff, families and community agencies will promote environmental stewardship and appreciation of nature. Hands-on activities, demonstrations, a student project showcase, a fourth grade Trash to Treasure Challenge and a Go Green Fashion Show (student-modeled jewelry and accessories made from recyclables) highlight the evening. The event is free, but wishing well donations are appreciated and will be used to create outdoor learning opportunities.
