The Dahlstrom Middle School student council never lacks for something worthwhile to do and two recent projects illustrate that fact. Sponsor Amy Madden reports that the council cooperated with Girl Scout Troops 533 and 315 over the winter on Project Linus, a national organization that collects and distributes handmade blankets to children in hospitals, shelters and social service agencies.

Students worked after school for months to make twenty-two blankets for donation. The blankets were made out of polar fleece in a variety of colors, designs and sizes for both boys and girls. Sponsor Madden says her Dahlstrom council “would like to thank Troops 533 and 315, as well as other student and staff volunteers for their help in this project.”

Additionally, the Mustang student council worked on the Central Asia Institute’s “Pennies for Peace.” This is a program that teaches the rewards of working together to bring hope and educational opportunities to children in other parts of the world.

“A penny in the United States is virtually worthless,” Madden says, “but in impoverished countries, a penny buys a pencil and opens the door to literacy. The mission here focuses on community-based education, especially for girls. A fifth-grade education for girls improves health for them and their families and spreads the value of education within their community.”

The Dahlstrom Student Council project brought in over 10,000 pennies and raised over $200.
