Counselor’s Corner
by ALLISON TILLOTSON
As a student progresses through a new school year, one comment often heard is: “I didn’t realize I was going to have such hard classes this year.”
Required and advanced courses often warrant this type of response, but the choice to take on these courses is a great decision. Each student has a different approach to course scheduling and meeting graduation requirements. Take advantage of every class we offer that relates to your college or career goals. If a computer science degree is in your future, take a technology class each year in high school.
When you reach classification as a junior in high school, don’t forget about those dual credit courses you can take through Austin Community College. You can receive high school and college credit at the same time. Two thoughts I share with all students: Take the most rigorous courses you can so you are ready for college and choose courses that relate directly to your future career choices. When you take these actions, you will be college and career ready!
Colleges and future employers need capable, responsible students and employees. They are looking for people who can work as a competent team member or individual, handle multiple tasks and responsibilities, and further the goals of the organization. How can I prepare for this step while I’m still in high school? Concentrate on your course choices and the rigor of your coursework.
Students should aim to maintain or improve their grade performance from year to year. It is also important to learn how to prioritize academic demands with any outside clubs, organizations, work or family responsibilities you have. Try new activities, take on more leadership roles and find volunteer experiences that are meaningful and worthwhile. Take your level of involvement with these activities as far as you can take it, but never put your grades in jeopardy through over-commitment. Your academics always come first!
Your school experiences are the building blocks to your future successes in college, career and life. Prepare yourself by taking rigorous courses and make good grades, get involved in school and community activities, and take on leadership roles. Learn how to work well with others and independently, develop good study and organizational skills, and balance your academic, social and extracurricular activities. You will be prepared for any challenges that come your way in your college and career experiences.
