Mini Cheer Camp set
Lehman Lobo Mini Cheer Camp is currently accepting registrations. The annual camp accepts participants from kindergarten through eighth grade and meets from 8 a.m.-noon. The camp is set for July 26-29, with a performance for parents the final day. Camp includes instruction in routines, cheers and chants. A camp t-shirt and snacks are also provided. One final feature is participation at a Lehman High School varsity football game next fall. For more information and registration forms, contact Coach Stacy Delgado at [email protected].
Batter up for Reading at Tobias
Almost 300 people took part in Tobias Elementary School’s recent “Batter Up for Reading!” night, celebrating learning, books and games. Tobias librarian Karen Kessel reports that “from hoops, bats and bases to technology, all areas of a child’s physical and mental development were stretched. Every child received a book to jumpstart their summer reading.” The event was the final “inning” of a game kicked off by visiting author Phil Bildner, who came to the campus – and others around the district – earlier in the year.
School planning in advance
Here’s a “heads up” for summer. All Hays CISD campus offices will be open Monday through Thursday throughout the summer – with the exception of the first two weeks of July. If you intend to visit, it’s always best to call first and all campus phone numbers are listed on the district’s website (www.hayscisd.net). For those of you who plan far in advance, the first day of school for the 2010-2011 school year is Monday, August 23, and school supply lists can be found on the district website. Elementary back to school night is set for Thursday, August 19.
Lobo tabbed for academy
Lehman High School’s Ashley Murillo has been chosen for the Governor’s Academy for Teaching Excellence (GATE) at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Sponsored by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, the three-week course is for students planning teaching careers, especially in math and/or science.
Barton book boom
Retiring Barton Middle School librarian Deanne Aldridge has always had a way with middle school students – a way that found multiple avenues in motivating them to read. The Lone Star Reading Program is one of those avenues and the 500 books the Bobcats read from the Texas Library Association-recommended list is proof of it. As she has for many years, Aldridge feted all of the Bobcats who read ten or more Lone Star books at a year-end party featuring pizza, chips, ice cream sundaes and door prizes. Barton students Steven Gilliam, Reese Martin, Clay Parham and Sabrina Smith were particularly noted for having read all 20 of the books on the Lone Star list.
Hornet helps others
Tom Green Elementary School third-grader Mariah Nicole Gonzales recently received recognition for having collected more than two gallons of aluminum pull tabs to give to the Ronald McDonald House. As has been reported in these pages, the tabs’ aluminum content value helps fund family stays during children’s hospital visits. Mariah worked through local Relay for Life channels to get the donation made.
Gold medals for choir at state
Earlier this spring we reported on Hays and Lehman choir and band students who had qualified to compete at the annual State Solo and Ensemble Contest at University of Texas on Memorial Day weekend. Lehman High School Director of Music Joey Lucita reports that graduating senior Cecilia Ortiz’s trumpet solo won a 1st Division gold medal. Silver went to soloists Blake Vajgert, Edwin Guadarrama, James Vera and Ziggy Santana. Word from Hays High School is that graduating senior Josh Delgado’s marimba solo also pulled a gold medal, while Amber Hamblin, Ricky Bracamontes, Ely Allen and Will Poeppelmeyer scored silver.
Director Nancy Cavendish reports that Hays High School choir accounted for five gold medals, those going to Cristina Caballero, Keeley Hooker, Stefan Sanchez, Jenna Kadjar and Victoria Volker. Silver medals went to Alaina McFadden and Carolie Wolf. Lehman Choir Director Daniel Arredondo reports that Lobo Kenny McCardle won a gold medal and silvers went to Michaela Castillo, Jordin Gonzales and Catherine Gonzalez.

Kyle Elementary follows donations
Students at Kyle Elementary donated $1,438 to Doctors Without Borders this spring to help Haiti relief efforts. The Panthers recently followed up on their donation, connecting through Webex with Drs. Craig Hobar and Alejandra Mitchell, plastic and craniofacial surgeons, who told them about their current Haiti efforts and how donations from across the globe are helping the earthquake-ravaged country.
The whole Webex experience was enhanced last week as the site did a live interview with Instructional Technologist Tracy Mulligan and others from the Kyle Elementary staff, as well as a few students. District distance learning specialist Christie Rickert said Mulligan “did us proud as she spoke very eloquently about how using Webex has helped expand possibilities for collaborations around the world. Honestly, between videoconferencing and webconferencing...we have the capability to connect with just about anyone!”
