Spring Break continues
Hays CISD staff and students continue to enjoy Spring Break this week. Offices re-open and student classes resume at regular times next Monday, March 22.
One Act Play opens
Lehman High School theatre director Marissa Meek announces a public performance of “Arms and the Man” next Tuesday, March 23, 7 p.m., at the LHS Theatre. A romantic comedy set at the end of a week-long war between Bulgaria and Serbia in 1885, the play is the Lobos’ 2010 One Act Play entry. Tickets are $3.
Hays High School theatre director Dana Naughton sends word of her department’s One Act Play for this year, “Rabbit Hole,” and its final pre-competition public performance Wednesday, March 24, 6 p.m. at the Burdine Johnson Theatre. The play is about a couple dealing with the loss of a child in a tragic accident. “It’s sad, but with a bit of humor with a few light-hearted characters!” Naughton says.
World’s largest college fair
High school students and their parents have three upcoming college fairs available over the next month, according to Hays CISD’s Charlotte Winkelmann. Billed as “the world’s largest college fair,” CollegeWeekLive is free and online next Wednesday and Thursday, March 24-25. The NACAC Austin College Fair is April 13 and bus transportation for high school juniors will be provided (register at campus counseling office). Buses will also be provided for the National Hispanic College Fair April 23. Registration is free – again, see campus counseling centers – and the fair is open to all students.
Blanco Vista PTA purchases
Blanco Vista PTA President Vanessa Petrea has announced her group’s purchases with over $2,500 in funds raised this year. Donations include $1,500 for guided reading books for all grade levels, $543 for three new library listening stations, $484 for a sound system already in use, and $150 for classroom and common area recycling bins.
Youth Art Month exhibit
Student artwork from across the school district is available for viewing during the annual observation of Youth Art Month. The work is on display at the Curriculum and Instruction Annex – Academy High School complex. A March 30, 6-8 p.m. reception will feature a silent auction benefiting art scholarships.
Classical music concerts
Bands from both Lehman and Hays high schools are offering their pre-UIL concerts Tuesday, March 30, at the Performing Arts Center. The program begins at 6 p.m. with the Lehman Concert Band, followed, in order, by the Lehman Symphonic Band, Hays Symphonic Band, Lehman Wind Ensemble and Hays Wind Ensemble. The concert is free and the public is warmly invited.
Chapa 5K challenge
Online registrations are available now for the 4th Annual Chapa 5K Challenge, set for Saturday, April 10. The event has drawn an increasing turnout each year since its inception and highlights fun that’s good for the heart and soul. Proceeds go to fitness projects for Chapa faculty, students and their families. Registration is set at $5 for elementary students, $10 for middle and high school students and $15 for participants 19 and older. To register, visit http://hayscisd.revtrak.net/tek9.asp.
Kyle teacher shares Cooperative Learning results
Kyle Elementary 4th-grade teacher Stacey Magnesio recently shared presentation duties at a session of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development conference in San Antonio. Magnesio told school leaders from around the world the results of her action research project that examined use of a structural approach to cooperative learning. Magnesio and Texas State University’s Barbara Davis and Laura Duhon shared methods to help beginning teachers use cooperative learning in elementary classrooms.
Camino Real kids tour KUT
Six Camino Real Elementary 5th-grade boys enjoyed a behind-the-scenes tour of KUT radio station in Austin last month, meeting a variety of production and celebrity staffers. Interviewed in the recording studio, they learned about the ins and outs of the radio business. The trip was made possible through the efforts of counselor Cynthia Anderson and Communities in Schools and CRES administrative staff.
Hornets write, right!
Tom Green Elementary Assistant Principal Cynthia Vasquez reports many Hornets devoted their February Saturday mornings to attend a teacher-sponsored writing camp called “Time to Write, Right!” A renewed sense of motivation and excitement about showing off their writing skills and building relationships outside their classrooms’ daily routine resulted, Vasquez says. Volunteering Tom Green teachers and staff included Kim Bishop, Marcela Zavala, Susan Tiffee, Ben Estrada, Lili Zetuain-Silva, Melanie Vernor, Heather Valdez and AP Vasquez.
