A Safari of sorts: Buda Area Chamber of Commerce hosts annual bash

by JASON GORDON

It turns out Hays head coach Doug Ragsdale didn’t have much to worry about as his Rebel baseball team traveled to play in the talent-rich Judson Tournament last weekend.

The Rebels won their first three games in the tourney and wound up finishing in fourth place overall.

“Thursday and Friday we competed wonderfully,” Ragsdale said. “It’s no excuse, but we just ran out of gas and pitching toward the end of the tournament.”

Hays beat Steele 10-7, Judson 10-0 and San Antonio Holmes 13-4 in its first three games.

Against Steele, Sam Breyfogle improved to 2-0 on the season to pick up the win on the mound, Phillip Abreo came in to pitch the final inning to get the save, and Nick Cavasos went 2-for-3 at the plate and scored three runs.

Against Judson, it was the Shane Kelley show, as he faced one batter over the minimum with a one-hitter. He had five strikeouts in the win, and Rueben Miller, Anthony Pesina, Justin Heath and Dylan Salinas all had two hits at the plate.

In the big win over Holmes, Cavasos got the pitching victory and Salinas was hitting star with three RBIs.

Hays then fell to Class 5A power San Antonio Reagan 6-1, before losing to SA Waggoner 13-7 on Saturday in the game for third place.

The Rebs now move on to play in the Austin ISD tournament. They will take on Austin High Thursday at 5 p.m., Bastrop (9 a.m.) and Eagle Pass (2:30 p.m.) on Friday, and Dripping Springs on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
