In regard to the letter by Dr. Wolbrecht (3/3/10) wrote concerning ACC in Kyle. We purchased our home in 1992 due to Hays CISD. We didn’t have kids at the time, but recognized that is where we wanted our tax dollars to rest. Dr. Wolbrecht states “We have carried students on our backs for 13 years K through high school. Enough Already!” This is especially where I differ with him. I don’t see educating a child a burden, hindrance or whatever it is that seems to upset him. We were childless for years, and never did I begrudge or feel angry that our money was educating a child. Quality education brings opportunity. Which creates jobs that establishes stability and a higher quality of life for its residents. Not to mention a lower crime rate.
In 1992 there was not one community park, no competitive grocer, and lacking eateries. Our money went to other cities. There was no tax relief because there was minimal business. Our affordable homes, quality education and a small town atmosphere increased Austin’s growth boom. Now we have opportunity, jobs and a base in which to keep our money in our town. We also boast a visionary grocery store, hospital and of new businesses to pad the tax rolls.
Times were different in his day. Today’s students face an even more daunting task of finding work and even harder time financing school. Student-held jobs are now being filled by an older and laid off work force. Today certification and experience are required for many entry level jobs. The workforce has dramatically changed.
Tuition increases have forced many out. Summer jobs no longer cover one semester’s fees. Admission in UT and A&M are as competitive as the Ivy League now. Texas State is now seeing huge increases from this. ACC enrolls even more now as a result. The laid off work force will also benefit in local job re training.
Austin trips equal money not spent here. I will gladly pay a tax increase to support our ACC. ACC offers opportunity for many who might not even consider college. We might even possibly lower the traffic? Would a senior exemption be allowed? I encourage others to sign the petition and get this on the ballot for discussion.
