Hays County’s two main political parties met this weekend for the county conventions, electing delegates to represent the area at the state conventions later in the year.
Democrats
Saturday, in an all-day meeting at the Wimberley Community Center, Hays County Democrats turned their attention to the November general election, selecting 54 citizens to attend the State Democratic Convention this summer in Corpus Christi.
In a two-fold process that involved precinct caucuses and a general assembly to balance the delegation both geographically and by gender, about 100 party activists who attended also proposed and discussed resolutions that will be on the agenda for the June state meeting.
Engaged in a drive for party harmony, the group unanimously chose outgoing County Judge Liz Sumter as chair for the convention. Amy Parham of Plum Creek was the convention secretary and former State Senator Steve Cariker of Dripping Springs served as parliamentarian.
The 23 delegates and 18 alternates to the state gathering from Northern Hays County include: David Salazar, Amy Parham, Jane Stoub, Samantha Bellows, David Wilson, Ed Winn, Theresa Schwartz, Linda Rodriguez, Ed Mears, Beth Nelson, Nancy Fahy, Leah Glossbrenner and Ned Arcides from the Kyle area precincts; and Sandra Tenorio, Raquel Najera, Kara Bishop, Stanley Kolodzey, Mahlin Musgrove, Judy Burns, Bill Burns, Jorge Anchondo, Dave Kettler and County Democratic Chair Katie Bell Moore from the Buda area.
Alternates from Northern Hays are Elizabeth Sullivant, Donna Haschke, Sarah Duke, Craig Smith, Ross Loh-mann, Barbara Vinson and Gayle Hudgins from Buda and vicinity; and Lucy Johnson, Esperanza Orosco, David White, Maria Rocha, Brenda Stewart, Ruben Garza, Bob Barton, Deborah Broadway, David Wiley, Page Peschang and Ethel Bank, all from in and around Kyle.
There are also 14 delegates and 20 alternates from the San Marcos vicinity, eight delegates and five alternates from the Wimberley area, and 11 delegates and 11 alternates from the Dripping Springs area.
GOP
Hays County Republicans met Saturday at Fuentes Elementary School in Kyle and elected 45 delegates and 45 alternates to attend the state convention in Dallas on June 11 and 12.
A crowd of about 250 was in attendance, including 50 delegates and 20 alternates from the Buda-Kyle area. The group voted on a platform of 21 resolutions and elected officers to the meeting, including party leader Bud Wymore as chair, Stu Hoyt as parliamentarian, Elisa Laraia as secretary, and Ron Hood as sergeant at arms.
The 17 delegates elected from the Pct. 2 area include John Saenz, Corrine Saenz, Ian Schmehl and Melissa Roush from Buda; Kym Navarro, Stu Hoyt and Gwen Hoyt from the Mountain City area; Joseph Burton, Ruben Lopez and Paul Terry from Kyle; and Jack Caraway, Clayton Caraway and Luanne Caraway from the east Kyle/Uhland area. Delegates from North Hays County include party chair Bud Wymore, Christie Pogue, Byron Pogue and Zachary Pogue.
