Big howdy to new schools

Mountain City Montage

by PAULINE TOM

“A Night in Bethlehem”, a walk-through at The Fellowship at Plum Creek’s property across from Barton Middle School happens on the evenings of Saturday, December 11th and Sunday, December 12th.

More holiday events coming soon.

Buyer beware. Check your 2011 calendar. I didn’t. In planning a trip to San Diego, I phoned Fallbrook to ask for the 2011 date for the Avocado Festival.  “Sunday, April 16th.” I corrected, with calendar in hand,  “You mean Saturday, April 16th?”. Her 2011 calendars all showed Sunday.

Helpful me, I phoned the manufacturer and reported the misprinted calendar. A week or so later I inadvertently saw the top row - with a Monday through Sunday week. Oops.

Be aware that your home-owner’s insurance might pay for lodging “similar to where you lodge on vacation” if you have noisy or messy major work (covered by insurance) on your home.

Holidays are especially hard for those grieving the loss of a loved one. My friend Bet Zimmerman, in Connecticut, created a remarkable website in tribute to her husband Doug (52), whose heart quit beating on a lunchtime run five months ago (www.cragman.com). I recommend it to Mountain Citians and anyone in the world for insights into those around us who grieve (especially those who do not have an “assured hope”), and for a helping hand in processing one’s own grief.

Bet’s “what I need” (www.cragman.com/dosdonts) could not be more practical or more thorough.

I know Bet through our bluebirding. She also created the overall best bluebird website, www.sialis.org  She’ll say, “That’s si-alis, the Latin word for bluebird, not the name of the erectile dysfunction pharmaceutical.”

Backyard birds have been few and far between in recent weeks for many. For me, they returned almost overnight over the weekend. Carolina Chickadee and Black-titmouse and Bewick’s Wren and more. An Eastern Phoebe keeps bobbing her tail and saying her name, “Phoebe.”

My next door friend, Destiny, says it sounds like “Feed Me.” To feed her (the Phoebe), let your insects live.

To feed “Montage”, send tidbits to [email protected] or 512-268-5678.
