Elementary dedications Friday
The public is cordially invited to the dedication of Hays CISD’s newest campuses, Carpenter Hill Elementary and Ralph Pfluger Elementary, this Friday, September 17. The Pfluger dedication is set for 8 a.m. and the Carpenter Hill dedication is scheduled for 9:30 a.m.
Hairspray auditions soon
Representing “40 Assets” Item #17 (Young person spends three or more hours per week in lessons or practice in music, theater or arts.), auditions are offered on Tuesday, Sept. 21, 4-8 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center for this year’s school musical, Hairspray. Hays CISD students and staff are welcome to audition and should be prepared to sing a short excerpt from the musical. Copies of the songs are available at the PAC by calling 268-8443.
News from Negley
The Negley Elementary Navigators “send a big ‘thank you’ to everyone who offered support on the recent magic bean plant fundraiser,” according to Assistant Principal Karen Lucita. Money raised is headed for technology equipment and playground shade, she says. Lucita offers additional word of upcoming Navigator activities that include the PTA giving treats to students who walk or ride their bike to school on National Walk to School Day Wednesday, Oct. 6. Negley and all district elementaries have Monday, Oct. 11, set aside for parent-teacher conferences. And first word goes out about the Oct. 23 Negley PTA Carnival. The campus now has a Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com.
Academy hosts superintendent
Academy High School students hosted HCISD Superintendent Dr. Jeremy Lyon recently in the first of what will be bi-monthly advisory meetings at the campus. Lyon told Academy students to expect changes this year that will include a name change, new school colors and a mascot. A “premier alternmative school of choice” is the vision Lyon said he has for the Academy and he encouraged students to offer their suggestions on how to achieve that goal.
Lots of reading at Tobias
School librarian Karen Kessel reports there was a lot of reading at Tobias Elementary this summer, with kindergarten and 1st grade students enjoying the Summer Reading Program and other Tobias students and faculty participating in the First Annual Summer Reading Challenge. The young students and many parents came to the library twice a week to check out library and literacy books and work through educational stations.
The Reading Challenge included prizes, new books and book fair gift certificates to students and adults who read ten or more books. Teachers Lisa DeLand, Nathan Pace and Stacie Sundquist were among those completing the challenge.
Open House Time
Three more campus open houses are on tap for the next week, with Chapa Middle School’s Thursday, Sept. 16, at 6:30 p.m., Camino Real Elementary’s this Friday, Sept. 17, at 5:30 p.m. and Wallace Middle School’s next Monday, September 20, at 5:30 p.m.
Camino Real Principal Marivel Sedillo says her campus will celebrate “our school, our teachers and our students” by hosting the Roadrunners’ Open House and Back to School Round-up. “It will be the perfect time to visit with your child’s classroom teacher, sign up for your parent/teacher conference and enjoy a fun-filled evening,” Sedillo says. A silent auction, food, games, moon walks, music and entertainment are planned.
Back to School Night at Academy
Academy High School offers its Back to School Night Thursday, Sept. 23, starting with a 5:30 p.m. dinner. Principal Julie Ruisinger welcomes parents at 6:15 p.m. with updates on planned campus changes and improvements this year. Austin Community College will offer Early College Start Program information and additional College Connection information and will provide assistance with admissions, financial aid and courses of study. At 6:45 p.m. parents will have the chance to visit with campus teachers.
College fair for seniors
A college fair for seniors of all three HCISD high schools will be offered Thursday, Sept. 30, at Lehman High School from 1-3 p.m. More than 30 Texas colleges and universities will be represented, as well as Austin Community College and the Air Force Academy. All will offer information about their post-secondary opporunities. Interested seniors should visit their counseling centers for information. Transportation will be provided. The fair is sponsored by the Texas Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.
Time to set parent-teacher visits
All Hays CISD elementary schools encourage parents to take advantage of a designated date for conferences and make an appointment with their students’ teachers on Monday, Oct. 11. Students are off for the Columbus Day holiday that day and all middle school and high school faculty members are involved in staff development.
