A rich tradition got richer recently, as Hays High School Rebel Marching Band rolled to the latest first division rating in the University Scholastic League marching contest. The Rebs’ long line of success stretches back 28 consecutive years and includes last year’s appearance as one of the state’s top 10 finalists at the Alamodome in San Antonio.
Texas high school bands alternate by school size divisions which years they have the opportunity to advance to state competition. It will be the 2011 season before they can again compete at a higher level.
Rebel Band Director Tony Gibbs says, “All of our directors were extremely pleased with the performance, as the students really put on an impressive show. Their commitment to the highest standard of performance is evident and it is a privilege for each of us to be a part of this organization.”
The band’s presentation this year is entitled “Spain…After Dark” and is based on music by Joaquin Turina’s “La Procession du Rocio.” Gibbs notes that “bright colors and the emotional intensity of a flamenco celebration are characteristic of this genre of music and have helped to create a show that is energetic, vibrant and exciting.”
That assessment went hand-in-hand with comments from this year’s judges, Charles Aguillon telling the Rebs,“Nice Work...Well done…Congratulations.” Fran Badrack offered, “Good ensemble sounds…very good individual players…I enjoyed your show.” Dennis Hopkins’ glowing comments called the Rebs an “awesome band” and said, “You are a tribute to your parents, your community and your school.”
