Odds & Ends

by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN

After 98 years of serving not only as a dance hall, a place for wedding receptions, anniversary celebrations, church plays and the basketball gymnasium for the Carl Wiegand School (Uhland Kangaroos), Club 21 burned to the ground Sunday morning. It held the honor of being the oldest continuously operating dance hall in the state of Texas. It was reported that an automobile drove into the building and burned up with the building. No official report was reported to this reporter by Sunday afternoon. Many fond memories of good times dancing to “good ol’” country music were recalled by many of us and some, including me, shed tears when the news was received. Thanks for the memories, Club 21.

As you entered the Uhland community center Saturday morning, you may have thought you went back in time to the 1880s. Many of the ladies dressed in dresses and bonnets of that time, as did some of the men (in vintage suits). Storefronts also depicted the mode of yesteryear. A general store, candy shop and bakery sold homemade baked goods, jelly and more. The general store also sold jewelry and vintage hats. A silent auction as well as a raffle was successful, as was the cakewalk and children’s games. The turkey and dressing meal was a real success as well as delicious. Could it have been the cornmeal? Thanks to all who took part in preparing, setting up, hauling, donating and pitching in where needed. St. John Lutheran Church has a bunch of dedicated members and regardless what organization has an event, ladies and gentlemen help each other in all successful events.

By the way, the community Thanksgiving dinner will be held on Sunday, November 14 following the 10:30 a.m. worship service in the rec center next to the church.
