The Databank: Campaign finance disclosures

Odds & Ends

by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN

Guess the biggest news is how lucky our community was to get only a nice soaking rain and some wind. Plum Creek did rise and caused a little inconvenience in having to detour over a bridge not covered by water, “turn around don’t drown” was observed. Farmers hurried to get the cotton picked and most of it in the area was picked and in modules. Noticed the earth worms have surfaced and are enjoying the wet ground and so have the fi re ants.

Glad to report that Lamar LaCaze is home after suffering bee attacks while he was mowing weeds. Hundreds of bees covered his body when son Trey found him. Lamar spent some time in intensive care and he has returned home and is improving. Can you imagine how many “stingers” the hospital staff had to remove? I understand these were the “killer bees.” We wish you a healthy recovery, Lamar.

Get well wishes also go to John Karnstadt, Sr. who has been hospitalized in the Central Texas Medical Center after a fall. He and wife, Annie, are residents of Texan Nursing and Rehab Center in San Marcos. Update: John is back at the Texan.   Sympathy is extended to the family of Joe Wiegand, who passed away on September 1, 2010. He was a resident for many years of Jennings, LA. Joe was born in Uhland, attended the Uhland School where he placed first in the Texas State Declamation contest. He was the son of Adolph and Elsa Hill Wiegand. Burial was in the Live Oak Cemetery in Uhland. With the passing of Joe, only two students of the class of 1938 of the Uhland High School remain. They are Clarence Heideman and Leonard Kramer.

Let’s see if I got this right this time. Sunday school is held in the rec center (parsonage) for the youngsters and the adult church school is in back of the church of St. John Lutheran every Sunday at 9:30 a.m., followed by church service at 10:30 in the Sanctuary. Everybody is welcome to come attend. Members of St. John Lutheran welcomed two new members to the congregation on Sunday, Sept. 6. They are Jerry Hall and George Lyons, Jr. The membership is very happy and blessed to receive these two gentlemen.

Gladys Sorrells spent several days including Labor Day weekend with son, Tim Sorrells and family in Austin. While there she also shopped for supplies to bake home made goodies for the bake sale at the Harvest Festival.

Clarence Heideman, accompanied Daniel and Sharon Heideman and Benny and Carol (Heideman) Schuman, to California last week to attend the Pearl Harbor Survivors Chapter 31 annual picnic. The event was held at Lake O’Neal in Camp Pendleton. They all reported a great time seeing those that attended, although only ten survivors and their families attended, there are many more survivors, who for what ever reason did not or could not attend. They also stopped by the home of Frank and Helen Scheel, another nephew, in Palm Desert, California. They enjoyed lunch and a visit with them.
