County to put in offer to buy Nicholson Ranch for habitat conservation

Seniors college fair Thursday

Seniors of all three HCISD high schools are invited to a college fair from 1-3 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, at Lehman High Scool. Three dozen colleges and universities will be represented, all offering information on post-secondary opportunities. Seniors should visit their counseling centers for information. Transportation will be provided.


Tom Green and Pfluger open house Thursday

Two more campus open houses are scheduled as September comes to a close. Tom Green Elementary hosts its Open House at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30. Ralph Pfluger Elementary hosts its Open House the same evening with a PTA meeting, also starting at 6 p.m. Contact these campuses for more information.


Noises Off at Burdine Johnson

Don’t miss the final big weekend of Noises Off, the hilarious big hit from the Hays High School Theater Department. Remaining performances are at 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 2, and 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Burdine Johnson Theater on the Hays High campus. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.


Lobos welcome author’s return

Author David Rice returns to Lehman High School this Friday, Oct. 1 to build on conversations he had with students last year. The Southwest Texas State University graduate has published “Crazy Loco” and “Give the Pig a Chance,” a pair of short story collections. He has a new book coming out soon and he’s fresh off a summer of working on three movies.


Rebs and Lobos at Cap City

Both the Hays High School Rebel Band and the Lehman High School Lobo Band compete this Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Capital City Marching Festival, held annually at Tony Burger Stadium in Austin. Lehman marches last, with a tentative start time of 6:30 p.m. Hays is tentatively scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Times are subject to change. Admission is $7 adults, $5 for seniors, students and children over 5.


Fall choir concerts at PAC

A number of Hays CISD choir concerts are on tap next week at the Performing Arts Center, starting with a three-campus offering Monday, Oct. 4. The program opens that night at 6:30 p.m. with the choir from Barton Middle School, followed by the Dahlstrom Middle School choir at 7:15 p.m. and the Hays High School choir caps off the evening at 8 p.m. The Lehman High School choir presents its fall concert Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 7 p.m. The round of concerts is completed Wednesday, Oct. 6, with a 6:30 p.m. performance by the Chapa Middle School choir, a 7:15 performance by the Simon Middle School choir and an 8 p.m. performance by the Wallace Middle School choir.  All concerts are free and the public is warmly invited.


Barton beginners host show

Barton Middle School hosts its Beginners Band Showcase at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 5. Admission is free and the public is invited.


Lehman HOSA sale set

Lehman High School’s chapter of the Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) hosts its annual garage sale in front of the school Saturday, Oct. 16, 7 a.m.-noon. A wide range of items will be offered, as well as refreshments. Most profits are devoted to help fund conferences and student field trips, though this year a portion go toward bringing awareness of Juvenile Diabetes, the national and state HOSA service project. To donate items, contact Yvette Sutten or Wendy Bergstrom at 268-8454.


Hemphill needs readers

Hemphill Elementary School’s 10th Annual Story Book Festival needs help. Community members are needed to read to students and describe their love of reading. The Friday, Oct. 29, event features a host of community volunteers, many dressed as storybook characters, all explaining why reading is important to them. Hawk Fall Festival set

The Hemphill Hawks’ annual fall festival has been announced for 5:30-8 p.m Friday, Oct. 22. The public is enthusiastically invited to join the Hawks and enjoy a petting zoo, moon jumps, the “mystery hallway,” cake walk, trick-or-treat hallway, game booths and more.
