Girls and Boys State delegates to share their experiences

Odds & Ends

by MYRTLE HEIDEMAN

Memorial services for Betty Jo Kleen were held in St. John Lutheran Church during worship service. Betty, who is at rest after a lengthy illness, was a member of St. John for many years. The sermon, “Delivery Room,” was in tribute to her, and favorite hyms were sung. Members of her family, friends and members of the church attended the service. Rest in Peace, Betty.

Raymond Heideman’s name was omitted as a co-host of the Hagedorn-Hohmann reunion last week. Though he was unable to be an active part of the event, he enjoyed reminiscing about the deer hunting years ago on Uncle Willie’s ranch in Comfort with cousins.

There was beautiful weather, a bunch of kinfolk and good food for the reunion. Some 44 members of the families attended the reunion, visiting under the shade of the pecan trees and tent. They came from far and near – Brady, Wylie, Temple, Belton, Flower Mound, Fredricksburg, Waring, Kyle, San Marcos, Austin, Buda and Uhland.

Many of the ladies of St. John Guild (and maybe some of the guys) will be busy baking cakes, bread, cookies, etc. and several turkeys for the Harvest Festival Saturday, Oct. 23 at the Community Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Come and enjoy shopping at the Country Stores, bake sale, cake walk and there will be games for the youngsters. Of course, you must partake of the “Turkey and Dressing” meal which includes dessert and drink.

On Nov. 6, all citizens of the city of Uhland are reminded and urged to participate in the “Clean Up” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. You may pick up the bags at the Community Center. All who help with the clean up will be issued a ticket for a free meal at Nona’s Cafe or Club 21. Help make your town a town you can be proud of.

Mark your calendar for Nov. 14 for the Community Harvest Thanksgiving dinner following the morning worship service (10:30 a.m.) and join us at the Rec Center next door. You may want to bring a dish or dessert. More information to follow.

The project of the Women’s Guild of St. John is continuing to support the troops by sending personal items and food they have requested. There is a list of requested items in the back of the church or if you would like to help with the payment of $12.50 for postage for a 12”x12”x 5.5” package. Of course, the Food Basket is always in need of non-perishable items.

Happy Birthday (some belated) to Ella Stephens and Kelly Jones Oct. 1, Betty Moczygemba Oct. 4, Tracie Crowell Oct. 5, Sue King Oct. 12, Carlson Jakubik Oct. 15, Alfred Haberer Oct. 17, and Barbara Ilse Oct. 18. Oh yes, our great grandsons Cooper Moore Oct. 16 and Raney Moore Oct. 24.

Your help is needed to gather pictures and a short history of the service men and women who served in the wars that our nation took part in. The plans are to establish a place in the community center (City Hall) to honor those who lived or are living in our community or surroudning villages. Contact Daniel Heideman for more information at 512-398-4748.
