Mountain City Montage
by PAULINE TOM
Remember our July 4th Parade and Lawnmower Races? Gather at the Old City Hall (itsy building on Mountain City Drive, near entrance) at 5 p.m. Parade starts at 5:30, followed by Lawnmower Races. Hot dogs and hamburgers available for purchase.
Appropriate greetings on Sunday: “Happy Independence Day!” and “Happy Birthday, Joe Krejci!”
Most likely, Joe lost some independence 43 years ago. He married Diane on July 8. Happy Anniversary!
Holly Cass tidbitted about tarantulas a few weeks back, when “Montage” was packed to the brim with snake tidbits. “We had a huge tarantula lurking over our back door upon arriving home on Friday night.” The next tarantula showed up during a conversation with her neighbor, John Wilson. A tarantula was walking down his shoulder.
According to an article in the March 2010 Texas Parks & Wildlife Magazine, “Texans frequently encounter tarantulas around the yard and in the wild. Yet bite incidents are rare (and no more painful than a bee sting) and occur only when someone is harassing or mishandling them.”
Tarantulas typically feed on crickets, June beetles, ground beetles, grasshoppers, cicadas and caterpillars. They liquify a meal and suck it up with a “straw-like mouth and sucking stomach.”
Why did the Mountain Cityian cross the room? I’m hopeful for, “To send a tidbit” – by email or phone. [email protected] or 512-268-5678.
