The Hays defense limited Akins during most of its season opening game against the Eagles. The Rebels task should get tougher this week, as Anderson brings its high-powered offense to Shelton Stadium. ANDERSON at HAYS
When: Friday, September 3, 7:30 pm
Where: Shelton Stadium
Records: Hays (1-0), Anderson (1-0)
Last Week: Hays beat Akins 41-20, Anderson beat McCallum 48-34
Last Meeting: Anderson 35, Hays 14 (2009)
What they’re saying: “We have a new swagger this year. It’s a 2010 swagger.” – Hays running back Torrance Smith
Anderson Offense: Spread/Wing-T
Anderson Defense: 4-3
Hays Offense: Multiple
Hays Defense: 3-4
Players To Watch: Hays – QB Caleb Kimbro, RB Torrance Smith, RB Tony Garza, WR Michael Romero, DL Austin Reyes, DE Alan Marin
Anderson – QB Sam Wehmeyer, RB Devonte Dewitty, RB Deryl Bunton, DE Breylin Wilson, DT Jacob Gonzales
Intangibles: Anderson has a high-powered offense, as Hays found out in last year’s loss. In its season-opening win over McCallum, Anderson racked up more than 400 yards of total offense. It will be hard to key on one offensive weapon, as nine players carried the ball and five more caught passes from talented QB Wehmeyer. Dewitty rushed for 124 yards on only six carries, including a 76-yard touchdown run that put the game away in the third quarter against McCallum. The Trojans also gave up more than 400 yards total offense on defense against the Knights, including 294 on the ground. The Rebels proved they can score as well in their season opener against Akins. The two-quarterback system with Cervenka (who will likely sit this week with a knee injury suffered late against Akins) and Kimbro worked well, as both led multiple scoring drives, and Smith and Garza looked as speedy as ever coming out of the Hays backfield. If Hays can cut down on the 100-yards worth of penalties it had against Akins, the Rebels have a chance to win an old fashioned shootout at Shelton Stadium Friday night.

LEHMAN VS. SAN ANTONIO EDISON
When: Friday, September 3, 7:30 pm
Where: Burbank Sports Complex, San Antonio
Records: Lehman (0-1), Edison (1-0)
Last Week: Edison beat Pleasanton 26-23, Lehman lost to St. Michael’s 35-13
Last Meeting: Lehman 18, Edison 11 (2009)
What they’re saying: “We have to come out with a better sense of urgency Friday night and get this bad feeling off our back. Our pride is at stake.” - Lehman head coach Steve Davis
Edison Offense: Option
Edison Defense: Multiple
Lehman Offense: Multiple
Lehman Defense: 4-2-5
Players To Watch: Lehman – LB Jon Frazier, RB/LB Charles Williams, WR/QB Harvest Trammell, WR Matt Riojas, FB Richard Porche, SE Jaylon Hardaway
Edison – QB Sergio Neaves, RB Rene Hernandez, WR/DB Messiah Greer, SE/LB Jonathan Cruz, FB/SS Seth Henry
Intangibles: Lehman will be looking to bounce back from a disappointing opening night loss to St. Michael‘s Academy and are hoping to be back at full strength with three offensive starters back into the fold in Williams, Hardaway and Frasier. It won’t be easy against a speedy, talented Edison team that has matched up well with them over the last four years. The Lobos were able to win a defensive battle with the Golden Bears last year on a rain-soaked Burbank turf behind the rushing of Jacob Torres. QB Sergio Neaves triggers a high powered no-huddle offense that will feature a two-platoon backfield in Hernandez and Henry. Greer (5 catches for 101 yards and 2 TD’s last week) is the go-to guy in the passing attack. The Lobos will have to be more efficient on offense and limit the amount of mistakes they made in Friday night’s loss. Trammell and Hardaway are the key receivers in the Lobo attack. Look for Lehman to get back on track with a strong first half and hold on late for their first win.
Free Press Prediction: Lehman 24, Edison 23
