The Lobo Elite basketball team took a short break away from league play hoping to get into the win column at the annual Mid-American Youth Basketball Tournament last weekend in Georgetown.
Although they represented themselves well against four more experienced teams, the Lobos failed to emerge with a victory in four tries at the tournament, which featured teams from all over the state.
The grueling, one-day schedule appeared to take its toll on the young Lobos as they dropped games to select squads from Belton, Corpus Christi, Georgetown and Austin.
The schedule makers did the Lobos no favors by including them in the same pool as two of the top three teams in the entire tournament.
Lehman opened pool play against the heavily favored Belton Elite Squad where senior forward Sean Voss led four players in double figures with 16 points as the Kings rolled to victory.
The Kings connected on five first quarter three-pointers and Scott Saunders had 11 of his 15 points in the second quarter as Belton built a halftime lead.
Trey Ash and Kody McKracken had 11 points each for the Kings.
Senior post Adam Woodworth had 15 points to lead the Lobos.
Although Lehman competed well early in their next contest, opening up a slim first quarter lead on the host Georgetown Elite Team behind the scoring of sophomore Charles Williams and freshman De Andre Carson, the Fury mounted a charge with senior forward Eric Johnson doing most of the damage inside and guard Keith Sparks draining a couple of three-pointers from the outside to overtake the Lobos and cruise to victory.
Sharp shooting Gino Silvas buried a three-pointer to get the Lobos off to another sizzling start against Jarrell, but the strong inside presence of the senior tandem of Jeremy Mertink and Kameron Congdon helped the Cougars build an early lead that they never would relinquish.
Silvas and Williams both were in double figures for Lehman.
The Corpus Christi Elite Team proved to be a better matchup for the Lobos, as the teams were nip-and-tuck throughout much of their contest until James Garcia tallied 11 of his 19 points in a pivotal third quarter to pace Corpus Christi to the win.
Lehman will now return to league play on Thursday, when they visit high-powered Del Valle. The Cardinals Elite Team features many of the players who led their high school squad to the district title last spring.
Del Valle easily won the first meeting between the two teams at Lehman two weeks ago.
