DRIPPING SPRINGS — A Dripping Springs High School speech and debate student has made history.
Jake Broyles became the first DSHS student to capture a state title at the Texas Forensic Association (TFA) State Tournament on March 11 with a first place finish in Program Oral Interpretation.
Program Oral Interpretation is a 10-minute performance that can include some combination of Prose, Poetry and Drama. All students must have at least two out of the three genres included in their performance and the use of a manuscript is required. The focus of the event is development of a theme or argument through the use of narrative, story and/or characterization.
In February, the DSHS speech and debate program qualified a school record of 19 students for the state tournament. In order to qualify, students must earn at least 10 points, which are awarded by placing at TFA invitational qualifying tournaments during the school year.
Broyles also earned a fourth-place finish in Informative Speaking and was a quarterfinalist in Dramatic Interpretation.
Alicia Hernandez claimed a state quarterfinals finish in Dramatic Interpretation while Evie Grimm and Claire Unger were quarterfinalists in Duo Interpretation.
