KYLE — A Lehman High School assistant principal was arrested and charged with a DWI and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.
Julie Rosales, 45, was booked into the Hays County Jail and released on Friday, April 7, on a $2,000 Surety Bond and a $2,000 Personal Recognizance Bond, according to jail records.
The incident occurred at 12:23 a.m. at Hillside Terrace/Interstate I-35, according to the Hays County Sheriff’s Office. The 911 call received was in reference to a vehicle stopped and not moving at the intersection, along with signs of a possible drunk driver. When the deputy attempted to pull over the vehicle, Rosales allegedly did not stop.
Following a short pursuit, deputies were able to get the vehicle stopped, according to HSCO.
Rosales is still employed and working for Hays CISD at this time. The arrest has been referred to human resources and the department is conducting an internal investigation, according to Hays CISD Chief Communications Officer Tim Savoy.
“Since the alleged activity did not occur in connection with the school, nor did it affect any students or school operations; the employee is still employed and working at this time. Once the HR investigation is completed; if necessary, the department could take employment-based action separate from any criminal case investigation,” Savoy said. “Further action regarding employment could also occur based on the final outcome of the criminal case, if needed.”
The specific language from the district’s human resources policy regarding an arrest is as follows: “By itself, an arrest does not establish that the alleged criminal conduct occurred, and no person shall be disqualified from District employment solely on the basis of an arrest. However, the District may make an employment decision based on the conduct underlying the arrest if the conduct makes the individual unfit for the position in question.”
Savoy added that employees accused of drunk driving are not allowed to drive students while there is a pending criminal case. However, it would be rare for an assistant principal to be in a position to drive students in a vehicle.
This is an ongoing story. The Hays Free Press will continue to monitor and update readers on additional developments.
