KYLE — The city of Kyle held a feedback session on June 27 to give an opportunity for residents to voice their wishes and concerns on the future skatepark at Gregg-Clarke Park.
The meeting began with a presentation by Kanten Rusell of SPA Skateparks. Russell was a professional skateboarder for 17 years and has used his love of the sport to create skateparks around the nation.
The expert gave numerous examples, both big and small, to show what the project’s finished look could be. The aesthetics ranged from industrial to artistic, colorful to earth tones, varied heights to flat level — the opportunities are endless.
Russel stressed that every feature is customizable and the park should be tailored to the community.
“We just want you to dream big,” he said “Think about what you want in the park and it’s our job to make it work and put it together.”
Aspects such as entrances, where water fountains are located, number of benches, lighting, terrain, materials, colors and graphics are all up to the community to decide.
After the presentation, residents were then given a survey to fill out that inquired about where they currently skate, what features interest them, their skill level and more.
There was also a hands-on opportunity where groups were created and give to-scale features to cut out and place in a grid in order to give a visual example of what would fit.
Lastly, each resident was able to put stickers on the features they wanted the most, similar to a heat scale, so SPA Skateparks and the city could focus on implementing the aspects that are most requested.
The park will have a total budget of $2 million, with the county matching the $1 million given by the city, and is set to be built in Gregg-Clarke Park where the current basketball and tennis courts reside. Community members were also encouraged to voice whether these courts are important to them and if the location should be changed.
SPA Skatepark’s goal is to have another engagement session with residents in a few weeks and begin the final design process in late 2023. Construction on the park is projected to start in 2024.
For residents that were unable to attend the session, a survey is available at www.tinyurl.com/Kyle-Meeting-1 through July 11.
