JOHNSON CITY — For the second year in a row, Pedernales Electric Cooperative (PEC) hosted campers and parents from across the cooperative’s coverage area on June 21 for a day of free learning and fun at the co-op’s headquarters in Johnson City, according to a news release. More than 150 people, including 70 campers in kindergarten through third grade, attended PEC’s Camp Save-a-Watt Solar Car Derby. Attendees had the opportunity to learn about solar energy from PEC experts, as well as build and race solar cars.

“It’s an honor to invite these young students to our headquarters to learn about solar power, electrical safety and conservation,” said Celeste Mikeska, PEC community relations manager.

According to the release, attendees also enjoyed arts and crafts, music, games, snow-cones and an appearance by Camp Save-a-Watt mascot, Wattson Racoon. Elijah Pfeifer, 8, of Marble Falls, finished first in the derby and received the grand prize trophy, while all participants received a medal for their hard work.

“PEC is proudly celebrating 85 years of powering the Texas Hill County and as we look back on our history, we also remain focused on our future,” Mikeska said. “By investing in programs that engage and inspire young students, we hope to keep our communities bright for years to come.”

The free, virtual summer camp was developed and put on by the cooperative’s experts. The program, according to the release, focuses on teaching youth about the importance of saving energy in everyday life, both at home and at school. Through hands-on weekly lessons, students learn about energy conservation, nature and electrical safety. With the help of parents and teachers, Camp Save-a-Watt can help the youngest members learn important tips to reduce their energy use and help schools and parents save money.
