WIMBERLEY — As a sophomore, Wimberley Texans quarterback Cody Stoever helped lead the team to AT&T Stadium last year, where they were 15-0 before losing to Carthage in the state final. The Texans are now 3-0 after a 35-27 win over Brock at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor last Thursday. Stoever completed 14 of 22 passes for 285 yards and accounted for all five touchdowns in the win.
Still, Stoever wasn’t perfect and had his first interception of the season, but connected with a pair of touchdown passes to Nolan Waida (six receptions for 114 yards) and another touchdown pass to Noah Birdsong (five receptions for 133 yards). Wynston Burttschell had two catches for 36 yards and Ty Thames had a 2-yard reception.
Though Stoever had 21 carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns, he wasn’t the team’s leading rusher. That honor was left to Chase Carson with 14 carries and 82 yards. Carson Schmidt added 6 yards on two carries for the 152-yard team total.
Dail Hernandez was 5 for 5 on PATs and defensively, Reid Leinneweber and Troy Heugly each had a sack. Kyan McAtee recovered a Brock fumble and Lucas Brookshier had an interception. The Texans travel to Fredericksburg on Friday, Sept. 15 and to Lampasas on Friday, Sept. 22 and have an open date on Sept. 29 before hosting Jarrell at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 6.
