Lady Texans head volleyball coach Stephanie Barthels said there was no carryover from last year.

“We put a lot of time and effort in practice to make sure we’re prepared for every set in every game and I thought we played really well tonight,” said Barthels.

The Texans (21-6 overall; 1-0 district) started slow in the first game down 4-1, and the game was tied a couple of times, but Wimberley was well prepared and won 25-11. The Fredericksburg Billies spent a lot of energy trying to keep the second game close, but fell 25-18, with Wimberley’s Laney Hennessee’s kill for the win.

“It could’ve been any player,” Hennessee said, downplaying the kill after the game, “as long as we get the point and win.”

A pair of aces from Rhagen Masur and kills by Kenslee Brown and Cameron Thames sparked the Texans to a 25-11 win in the third game for a 3-0 sweep, assuring that it wouldn’t go to five games this year.

On the attack, the team totaled 28 kills. Hennessee led with 12 kills, followed by Brown with five kills, Thames four, Mariah Mccoy and Addison Parks three each and Lilli Sandoval one. Masur led the team in digs with 10, Addie Laney, Jesse Weeks and Hennessee each had six, Sandoval four, Brown three, Mccoy two and Parks one. Masur had seven service aces, Hennessee four, Laney and Sandoval two each and Weeks one.

Thirty-two service receptions were mostly handled by Masur and Hennessee, who each had 12, Laney and Sandoval each had four and all with only four errors. Brown, Mccoy, Hennessee and Thames were each credited with solo blocks. Weeks, who is 84 assists away from the 2,000 mark, had the team total of 19 assists. Hennessee, a junior who has committed to Alabama, now has 795 career kills. With a 3.8 kill per set average, and 13 regular season games remaining, playoff games could help her reach the 1,000 mark this year.

The Lady Texans will play at 6 p.m. at Bandera on Sept. 15 and will host Boerne at 6 p.m. on Sept. 19 and Navarro at 6 p.m. on Sept. 26.
