DRIPPING SPRINGS — In Dripping Springs High School’s second year competing in class 6A, the girls swim team of freshman Izzy Boldrick, sophomore Laurel Hoskovec, junior Macie McCurry and senior Anna Hoskovec earned a 14th place finish at the UIL State Swimming and Diving Meet at the University of Texas Swim Center in Austin, held Feb. 23 and 24.
Anna, who set a school record at the regionals in the 500-yard freestyle, broke her own record at state and finished 18th overall. In the 50-yard freestyle event, McCurry took 10th place overall. She also set a school record as the lead in the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle that finished 11th overall, another school record, with Anna, Boldrick and Laurel swimming the next legs.
“I’m supremely proud of these kids. This team has achieved far beyond every expectation,” head coach Michael Hoskovec said after the meet.
The same team of four, swimming in a different order, broke the previous school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay and in doing so earned a sixth place overall finish.
“It’s a great example of working together as a team, believing in one another, and working towards common goals,” the coach continued.
Andrea McCarthy, the head coach of the swim team for 13 years and now three years as assistant coach to Hoskovec, will be retiring after teaching 17 years in the district. McCarthy was named the 2017-2018 Coach of the Year by the Texas Girls Coaches Association and was head coach when the girls swim team won State in 2018.
