WIMBERLEY — The News-Dispatch named Wimberley Texans’ quarterback Cody Stoever as the 2023 Player of the Year.
“This means the world to me. My teammates, coaches and I put in a lot of hard work. I’m in a position where I kind of get to shine and I’m very thankful for that,” Stoever said after the presentation. “I give the Lord all the credit for giving me the ability to do what I get to do. I’m just playing to win games, but when looking back on a pretty good season it’s great to see the recognition, not just for me, but the whole town of Wimberley.”
Stoever was Wimberley’s District 13-4A MVP, named 4A Offensive Player of the Year by the Texas Sports Writer’s Association, and is up for other Austin area awards. Last year, the sophomore quarterback helped the Texans get to the 4A Division II State Finals, and this year, the Texans were a win away from returning to State. As a junior this year, he completed 191 of 266 passes for 2,992 yards with 41 touchdowns and carried the ball 209 times for 1,585 yards and scored 32 touchdowns.
Stoever accounted for 73 of the team’s total of 102 touchdowns this season.
“He just an outstanding young man. People who watch him play get to see what he can to on the field, but I get to witness what he does off the field all the time,” said Doug Warren, Wimberley High School athletic director and head football coach. “He’s a model young man, leads the kids, a warrior and somebody you want on your football team. He displays everything a coach can talk about, well rounded and tough, having high character and doing things the right way. He embodies all of those qualities and is the ultimate competitor. He hates to lose and that is very evident in the way he plays. I’m blessed to be able to coach him and glad he’s a part of the Wimberley Texans.”
