WIMBERLEY — The Wimberley High School Texans baseball team split the final two games of the regular season against Davenport High School with each team taking a win at home — Wimberley 3-2 and Davenport 5-4 — April 22 and 25. The results are a three-way tie between Davenport, Navarro High School and Wimberley in 4A District 27.
In the first game April 22, Wimberley’s pitching combination of the starter Gentry McGinnis and Jaden Hall had a two-run lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Texans were able to turn a pair of double plays to keep Davenport off the board, until a two-run equalizer homer tied the game 2-2 in the top of the third inning. Centerfielder Bryson Anderson made a nice catch in deep centerfield and a ground out ended the inning. Wimberley had the bases loaded in the bottom of the home team frame, but couldn’t push a run across the plate.
In the top of the fourth, Davenport had the go ahead run at second base, but a spectacular sliding catch by Anderson and a strikeout ended the threat. It remained tied until Wyatt Yeatter hit a sacrifice fly in the home half of the fifth inning for a 3-2 lead. The Texans turned their third double play in the game to shut down Davenport in the top of the sixth inning.
“Those are like a defensive grand slam,” head coach Jeremy Locke said about the double plays. “They are a pitcher’s best friend. [Anderson] makes plays like that all the time and makes it look easy.”
Wimberley failed to score in the bottom of the frame and Davenport was held scoreless in the top of the seventh to preserve the win.
In the second game of the series at Davenport April 25, Sage Hall hit a two-run home run for the Texans in the top of the sixth inning for a 4-1 lead. Wimberley was held scoreless in the top of the seventh, but Davenport scored four runs in the bottom of the inning for the 5-4 win.
For the playoffs, the Texans will be the number two seed in Division 2 and will face Lago Vista High School with the date, time and place to be determined.
