AUSTIN — The Dripping Springs High School Tigers baseball team ended district play as co-champions in the University Interscholastic League 6A Region 4 District 26 after traveling to play against Westlake High School Chaparrals in the second game of the two-game series Saturday, April 26.
The Tigers won game one Tuesday, April 22; the final score in game one was Tigers 3, Chaps 2 and the winning pitcher was Cooper Rummel.
Game two was scheduled for Friday, April 25, but was postponed until 5 p.m. Saturday. The game started on time in front of a large crowd in attendance. The starting pitcher for the Tigers was Taylor Tracey.
The Westlake Chaps scored in the first inning and held the Tigers scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, where the Tigers had two runners on base. Tiger Conner Helms was next up and hit a three-run home run over the left field fence.
The Tigers scored a total of five runs in the top of the sixth inning and took the lead for the first time in the game. Tracey was able to hold the Chaps scoreless in the final two innings and the final score was Tigers 5, Chaps 1.
The Tigers finished the game with four hits and no errors, while the Chaps had two hits and two errors.
Now co-champions in the UIL 6A Region 4 District 26, the Tigers clinched the number one seed position in the 6A D2 bracket. As per the UIL website the playoffs will begin May 3, but the location and opponent are still not known at this time.
Following the game, head coach Chris Payne said he was very pleased with the 5-1 finish. He mentioned that the game was a battle and was very impressed how the Tigers were able to get the job done. He was very proud of his players and their finish.
